Redefining Patient Support
Traditional diabetes management focuses solely on the patient. Sugar Ribbon shifts the focus to the "co-habitant" (partners or family). By analyzing the lives of both parties, we sought to turn health data into a bridge for better emotional and physical support.
Data Collection Strategy
We utilized a hybrid approach to capture a week in the life of our participants:
- Objective Data: Tracked sugar intake via a touch panel, bathroom activity via infrared sensors (for hydration tracking), and daily steps via mobile pedometers.
- Subjective Data: A Telegram Chatbot collected real-time food logs and daily "support scores" from both the patient and their partner.

The Intervention
We discovered that visual data is more motivating than verbal coaching. We designed the Sugar Ribbon, a frosted glass lighting device in the shape of a knot.
- The left bead pulses based on the patient's blood glucose.
- The right bead reflects insulin intake. This "ambient awareness" allows family members to stay informed and supportive without the friction of constant questioning.
